Ok, here's the bad news. Windows 95/98 is not optimized for dial up service via a modem to the internet. If you're wondering why your modem isn't doing as well as you'd expect, this could be the reason. Magellass Corporation's Netmaster 99 is allows you to edit the system registry values for the dial up networking (DUN) module which can significantly improve your internet performance. Netmaster allow you to specifically edit the IPMTU, NDI cache, time to live (TTL), RWIN and Maximum sockets and well as other options which affect browser environment. There is an extensive help file which details suggested values for each parameter, the importance of each within the DUN and tips on how to use Netmaster to boost your speed. Unfortunately, this is only a 10 day evaluation copy but the changes to the registry will remain unchanged after the product expires. This is a must-have utility even for Windows 98 users.

If you're looking for a comprehensive all-in-one product, you've come to the right place !! Webcelerator, from Accelerator Software, is a considerably more advanced caching utility than Netsonic. This accelerator gives the user the option to select either of two basic strategies for caching, one which is "futuristic" and the other "historical", tweak the dial up networking (DUN) component of the Windows operating system, and produces a visual of your network performance and the effect of caching. Webcelerator lets you choose how aggressive caching is, and can be set to allow viewing offline. In addition, you can set an exclude list, for sites which are frequently updated, (which in this build, is a text file in the webcelerator folder). The help file details suggested values for the MTUmax, TTL and Rwin, whose values can significantly affect the performance of DUN. Unfortunately, the DUN is not optimized for internet use by default. Webcelerator will install into the startup by default, and the loads the plugin for DUN into the system tray. It works well with Netscape and Internet Explorer. If you are already using a DUN utility such as Netmaster99, you should uninstall it before loading webcelerator.
